What's your motivation when it comes to wanting to improve or enhance your physical health? Has the pandemic made you more determined to get your daily dose of exercise or is the virus having a negative impact on your mental health?

The pandemic has affected the world we live in and lives have been lost and we have all experienced many challenges such as loss of employment, financial worries and domestic violence. Our resilience challenged and put to the test, who would have thought we would be in a generation where we experience a worldwide pandemic! Each of us will deal with its impact in our own way, you may find that you are someone who can adapt to change well and go with the flow. You may have strategies and support networks to turn to if your mental health suffers and the access to the relevant services to support your needs. On the other hand you may be someone who has limited access to services and be in a socially deprived area, on a low income or being supported by benefits.  We have found these areas such as Sparkhill, Bordesley Green and Balsall Heath populated with people from BAME communities  may be classed as living in poverty because of their postcode.  We have found that in these areas individuals have very little motivation or no motivation  to look after their physical or mental health because keeping a roof over their heads and food on their table for their families is their first priority. That is one of the reasons why the Women's Wellbeing Hub exists. We recognise the need for access to services in poverty areas and we recognise that there may be a cultural barriers in coming forward to ask for help or generally the lack of knowledge of services that could are available to families. Our family centre has been providing access to free services for more than twenty years and our wellbeing hub for the last three years.

We have been providing services to support BAME women to access fitness classes, cycling clubs, creative arts and textiles sessions, coffee mornings and much more. You can read more on our website 

Lifestyle factors can influence both physical and mental health. Any form of physical activity is a great way to keep healthy as well as improving mental and emotional health. Research has shown that doing exercise influences the release of feel good hormones in the brain called endorphins. Even a short burst of activity, a brisk walk for example increases our mental alertness, energy and positive mood. When we feel safe in this state of mind, our day seems to feel brighter and you may feel more productive and optimistic in your outlook. The impact of movement sends a ripple of goodness into your day and even when stress arises that day, you may be in a better mindset to tackle the issue.

Being a mon, a carer, a wife comes with a large amount of responsibilities, someone in the home or extended family needs something from you every minute of the day and sometimes it may feel like there are not enough hours in the day! What if you fill you cup of chai first? What if you make a choice to do something for yourself every day?

We know in the Asian community, women may prioritise cooking for their husbands, fathers, in laws and spend time preparing and cooking delicious dishes and home cooking is the best, speaking with women they tell us they don't have the time to fit in exercise or time out for themselves but maybe managing time effectively could support in getting the best of both. We understand some of the barriers that potentially prevent us from putting ourselves first, our work supports women's wellbeing and we can help you manage your time, build your self confidence and empower you to take charge of your own needs so you have the energy you need to continue supporting the needs of the family. Diabetes and high blood pressure are common in the community, and can be prevented if picked up early and lifestyle changes. 

Since the first lockdown in March 2020 our service delivery changed and we have been working with women using social media platforms and video technology for women to still be able to support their physical and mental health. We are regularly delivering sessions via Zoom and are still able to offer connection and a supportive virtual environment. Our women are benefiting from regular and consistent sessions and supporting their physical health which in turn helps to support their mental and emotional health. There is no contract or fees, we are fortunate enough to deliver these sessions thanks to our funders.

So what's your motivation? Our women tell us they are joining in with activities to support their weight loss goals, to improve their mental health, to help them sleep better, to live to a ripe old age, to be able to have the strength to look after their disabled children as they age and to feel better in themselves.
